What rejection taught me about resilience

Lessons from rebuilding confidence after hearing “no.”

What rejection taught me about resilience

I have a folder on my desktop called 'No.' It has 184 emails in it. Investors, partners, hires, hospitals, two oncologists, and the woman I thought I would marry.

For a long time I thought resilience was about not letting the no land. I was wrong. The nos always land. Resilience is about what you do in the forty-eight hours after.

I gave myself a rule: feel it for a day, name what I'd actually lost, then look for the smallest next ask. Not the heroic pivot. The next email. The next call. The next conversation that was still possible.

Cancer taught me the same lesson at a different scale. The body says no in ways you can't argue with. You still get to choose what you do tomorrow morning.
