5 truths nobody tells you about caring for aging parents
The emotional realities behind the role millions quietly carry.

One: it will cost you more than money. It will cost you sleep, career momentum, and a version of your relationship with your parent you didn't know you were still holding onto.
Two: the medical system assumes a full-time, unpaid, expert coordinator exists in every family. That person is usually you. No one will hand you a job description.
Three: grief starts long before death. You will mourn the parent you had while you care for the one in front of you. Both are real.
Four: ask for specific help. 'Let me know if you need anything' is kind and useless. 'I'll bring dinner Thursday' is love.
Five: you are allowed to be changed by this. Most caregivers come out the other side with a different relationship to time, work, and what they will tolerate. That isn't damage. That's data.
