Recovery cafés and the Saturday I stopped hiding
How a converted church hall became the most honest room in the city.

I had been sober for eleven months and known by no one. I would go to meetings in towns I didn't live in, sit in the back, and leave before the coffee.
The recovery café was a converted church hall on a Saturday morning. Someone handed me a mug before they asked my name. I cried into it, which was embarrassing, and no one made it a moment.
I came back the next week. And the next. By month three I was making the coffee. By month six I was the person handing the mug to someone new.
The hiding ended in that room. Not because anyone told me to stop. Because there was finally a room where it wasn't required.
