The conversation that saved my marriage

We had been having the same fight for two years. Different topics, same fight. The one underneath was: do you still choose me, or are you just here?

The conversation that changed things wasn't dramatic. It was a Sunday morning, coffee, no phones. We agreed in advance: no defending, no fixing, no scorekeeping. Just the truth about where we each actually were.

What came out wasn't what either of us expected. We weren't falling out of love. We were exhausted and lonely inside the same house, and neither of us had said it out loud.

Naming it didn't fix it. But it stopped the fight from being a proxy for the real thing. From there, the work was possible.
